"Early Golden" American Persimmon Tree
The "Early Golden" American Persimmon is a foundational heirloom masterpiece, discovered wild in Illinois in 1880 and long celebrated as the matriarch of modern persimmon breeding. This highly esteemed heritage variety yields heavy, reliable crops of medium-to-large, golden-orange fruits that boast a smooth, custardy, and jelly-like texture. Intensely sweet with a concentrated, complex profile of brown sugar, rich honey, warm caramel, and subtle spiced dates, it sets the historic standard by which all other American persimmons are judged.
Quick Growing Tips
Sunlight: Requires at least a half-day to a full day of direct sun (8+ hours preferred) to maximize sugar production and ensure uniform fruit maturation.
Climate & Hardiness: An exceptionally cold-hardy survivor, reliably withstanding freezing winter temperatures down to USDA Zones 4–9 (-25°F) with ease.
Pollination & Yield: It is uniquely partially self-fertile, frequently producing seedless crops entirely on its own. However, planting a male pollinator nearby within wind range significantly enhances overall crop size.
Harvesting Window: Living up to its name, it has an extra-early ripening schedule, dropping delicious fruits cleanly from early September through October without needing a hard frost to sweeten. Enjoy fresh only when soft, gooey, and jelly-like to eliminate natural astringency.
