"Osage" American Persimmon Tree
The “Osage” American Persimmon is a highly-regarded legacy selection grown out and named by pomologist Wes Rice in Oklahoma. Originally selected as a seedling from the esteemed James Claypool cultivar H63A, this prized variety is celebrated for coming into production remarkably early in its life and maintaining heavy, dependable yields of large fruit. When fully ripe, the large fruits turn a beautiful deep orange, yielding an extraordinarily smooth, clear pulp with a low seed-to-fruit ratio and an excellent, rich flavor profile full of concentrated sugars, honeyed notes, and subtle caramel undertones.
Quick Growing Tips
Sunlight: Requires at least 6 to 8+ hours of direct, daily full sun to fully color its large fruits, prevent early fruit drop, and develop its top-tier, sugary flavor profile.
Size & Spacing: Naturally exhibits a medium-sized tree habit—maturing to roughly 30 to 35 feet tall when left unpruned—making it a perfect visual anchor or shade producer that can easily be maintained at a lower canopy height through annual structural pruning.
Climate & Hardiness: An incredibly tough, heat-tolerant, and cold-hardy northern performer with a 90-chromosome heritage, it handles freezing winter climates flawlessly across USDA Zones 4b through 9b.
Harvest Dynamics: Fruit ripens exceptionally early in the season compared to late-fall varieties; allow the heavy clusters to hang on the branch until they turn completely soft to the touch to safely discharge youth tannins for a mouth-watering, fresh-eating experience.
