"J-59" American Persimmon Tree
The “J-59” American Persimmon is highly-regarded legacy heirloom was developed out of the historic James Claypool breeding program. Closely matching the legendary H63A cultivar in overall fruit quality, this prized cultivar is highly celebrated for its powerfully aromatic scent and its distinctly upright, space-saving tree architecture. When fully ripe, the medium-to-large fruits turn a beautiful deep orange, yielding an extraordinarily smooth, rich pulp with a complex flavor profile reminiscent of caramelized brown sugar, sweet vanilla, and rich honey.
Quick Growing Tips
Sunlight: Requires at least 6 to 8+ hours of direct, daily full sun to maximize sugar concentration and ensure even fruit ripening before the autumn freezes.
Size & Spacing: Naturally exhibits a narrow, upright growth habit—maturing to roughly 15 to 25 feet tall—making it highly efficient for tight orchard rows, suburban yards, or interplanting where ground space is limited.
Climate & Hardiness: An exceptionally tough and resilient northern performer with a 90-chromosome heritage, it handles intense winter freezes flawlessly across USDA Zones 5 through 9 (and often into zone 4 once established).
Harvesting: Allow the fruit to hang until it drops cleanly or becomes completely soft and squishy to the touch; this natural bletting process eliminates the fruit's young tannins to ensure a mouth-watering, jam-like flavor.
